Today’s Gospel continues the series of ‘parables of the Kingdom’.  The second one, about fish gathered in a net, is similar to the harvest parable last week, but the connection with the precious gift of wisdom in our first reading is intended to focus our attention on the first parable – treasure hidden in a field.  When I was growing up I had a small prayer book called ‘the Key of Heaven’ which contained the Sunday Mass texts and various common prayers and was not much bigger than a box of matches – easily slipped in the pocket.  The title served as a reminder as to where true wisdom lies.  God is the source of wisdom and we find it by coming close to him in prayer.  Nothing is more precious.  Solomon knew that while he might have riches and power, without wisdom he would lack what he needed to be a good ruler.  Our second reading reminds us that we are made to share God’s glory and this knowledge helps us to put everything else in life into perspective.  As I celebrate 50 years of priestly ordination and ministry I will reflect on how the Lord led me to discover this hidden treasure, not only leading to ordination but every day since then.
