Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist are appointed by the Bishop. Their mission is mainly to assist the parish priest to distribute the chalice at Mass. However, they can also assist the priest by leading Eucharistic Adoration, and when necessary, by taking communion to the sick, the elderly and the house-bound.
In St Mary Immaculate and the Holy Archangels, thanks to the size of the parish, our priest is able to fulfil his desire to visit personally those parishioners who wish to receive the Eucharist. Through his weekly visits, these parishioners can have access not only to communion, but to a brief moment of prayer, receive the Sacrament of Confession and catch up with relevant parish news. This enables them to feel still very much part of the parish community who supports them with their prayers.
However, in case that the priest cannot, for whatever reason visit the parishioners, he will delegate this important part of his ministry to the Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, to ensure that they continue to be sustained by the Eucharist and the love of their parish.
