In different ways each of today’s readings speak to us of the spiritual nature of the Kingdom of God. For the Prophet Zechariah the Messiah will come not on the white charger of a warrior but riding a donkey. He will proclaim peace for the nations and banish all the equipment of war but will not contradict himself by using military means to accomplish this. St Paul reminds the people of Rome that the indwelling of the Holy Spirit has liberated us. If we choose to live by unspiritual values then we must expect to suffer the consequences. Finally, in St Matthew’s Gospel Jesus tells us that this wisdom has been granted to mere children, yet is hidden from the learned and worldly wise. It is in his embrace that we will find rest and peace. A yoke can be seen as a physical restraint but is also a means of making a burden easier to carry. To accept the ‘yoke of Christ’ means to work with God’s plan rather than struggle against it and so bring closer the peace he promises.
