The Church opens out the manifestation of Jesus as Son of God at the Epiphany to the wider world at the beginning of his public ministry. Today we hear how he is baptised by John in the river Jordan. We hear the mysterious voice from heaven, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Jesus’ true nature as Son of God from all eternity, now in human flesh, is revealed. The hovering of the Holy Spirit in the outward form of a dove shows how he is always at one with the Father and the power of the unseen God is at work in him. God’s gift of grace through the Holy Spirit is imparted to us through our baptism. The difference is that instead of simply revealing our inner nature, this gift transforms us into what we were not before – not simply creatures made in God’s image, but members of his family, made new or born again by the power of the Spirit. From tomorrow we enter ‘Ordinary Time’ and on Sundays read the unfolding public ministry of Jesus from St Matthew’s Gospel, interrupted for Lent and Easter and resuming after Pentecost.
