In today’s Gospel we hear the parable of the workers in the vineyard. It could be taken as moral guidance on what constitutes a just wage – whatever the vineyard owner chooses to pay or, by way of contrast, a ‘living wage of 1 denarius’ regardless of the hours worked. However, Jesus is not talking about social policy but the Kingdom of Heaven, something the Church emphasises by her choice of our first reading from Isaiah. Even at the eleventh hour the way into the Kingdom is still open to us and we will not receive a lesser reward than those who made their way in ahead of us. Our reward is the vision and company of God for ever – there can be neither more nor less only a greater or lesser capacity to receive this wonderful gift.
