Fundamental to the Scriptures and to our Christian understanding of the world is that God created everything. His creative work was not confined to the ‘Big Bang’ but continues throughout time. Although he uses our parents to bring each us into physical existence he is intimately involved in this process by way of giving us directly our spiritual nature and immortal soul. When we describe God as the source of wisdom we acknowledge that he understands the nature of what he has created in a more profound way than human reason alone can teach us. In both Old and New Testaments he sets out before us guidance on the right way to live so that we may fulfil our potential and be perfected by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Commandments set out a bottom line of what we need to do or to avoid but in the Sermon on the Mount Jesus encourages to go beyond this minimum. Allowing the wisdom of God expressed in the Commandments to guide and inspire us will enable us to love both God and our neighbour as fully as we are capable.
