“Lead us not into temptation.” This familiar translation of the Lord’s Prayer can also be misleading. God does not tempt us to do wrong but he does allow us to be put to the test. The Greek word ‘peirasmos’ might be better translated as ‘time of trial’ or ‘time of testing’. This expectation is central to our first reading and Gospel today. The ‘Day of the Lord’ - the day when the Lord comes to judge the world – will be preceded by a time of testing. The Apocalypse or Revelation of St John develops this idea in great detail and sometimes people are tempted to focus on these details as if they were a film script to identify at what stage we are at now. You tend to find this approach in the leaflets distributed by Jehovah’s Witnesses. However, what is more important than trying to identify where we are is being prepared NOW, whether that day is near or far off. “But as for that day or hour, nobody knows it, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, no one but the Father”. These thoughts are intended to prepare us for the celebration of the Kingship of Christ next Sunday, and the Season of Advent that begins on 1st December. Will our names be written in the Book of Life? Are our hearts open to Christ’s transforming love? Are there areas within us that need repentance and forgiveness?
