14TH SUNDAY OF YEAR: A prophet is despised only in his own country

“A prophet is only despised in his own country among his own relations and in his own house.”  A theme running through today’s readings is how to discern the voice of God.  God did not fall silent 2000 years ago.  Public revelation ended with the Apostles but God still speaks to us, through the voice of the Church and through individuals.  We need discernment.  St Paul recognises how easily someone can be deceived by a personal vision, or fall into pride.  The message of an individual needs to be tested against the perennial teaching of the Church – the Holy Spirit cannot contradict Himself but can lead us to new ways of looking at things.  At the same time we can be deaf to God’s message because the messenger seems to us an unlikely choice.  It is no coincidence that King David and many of the prophets were very young when they were called by God and given a special message.  The same was true of most of those to whom Our Lady has appeared – St Bernadette or the children at Fatima.  We should not be credulous when someone claims to have a message from God but neither should we be dismissive.  Instead we should weigh carefully not only the circumstances but the content of the message and accept the guidance of the Holy Spirit speaking through the whole Church in our process of discernment.
