Parish Quiz Night - 5 May 2017
St John Houghton - Tiptree

Another great quiz night - raising £480 for Besters, our twin parish in South Africa. Many thanks to Gloria, Viv, Sarah and Naimh for the questions; Michael and John who managed the scoring; everyone who helped with the food; and, by no means least, all that came and made the evening so successful.

Live Nativity - 11 December 2016

What an amazing Live Nativity it was! Truly grateful to God Almighty for the perfect weather this afternoon. I can safely say that Kelvedon Catholic Parish's 1st ever Live Nativity was a huge success. We had around 160 adults and children today and all had a memorable event. The true meaning of Christmas, the miracle birth of the Saviour acted out by children who had not practiced their parts before this evening and yet brought so much joy to those watching them perform.

We wish to thank Michael and Sally Staines for hosting the Live Nativity at their Barn. So much work went into this. Despite a recent fire in their home that took out all the electricity include the Barn's, Michael and Sally continued the work they had begun to host the event today. May the Good Lord continue to bless you and yours always.

Our appreciation also to Pat, Nick & Charlotte Ezra, Donatella Bartin for their amazing songs & sound system and to David for narrating.

Last but not least, to you who came to support us and took home memories of a truly magical event, we thank you and wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

See you again next year?

Desmond & Jane Crone - Silver Wedding

At Coggeshall the 9am Mass (6th November) was was offered in Thanksgiving for the 25th Wedding Anniversary of Jane & Desmond Crone.  It was a nice family Mass with Josephine and Ben giving the two readings, Jane was Eucharistic Minister, Desmond gave the bidding prayers.  The flowers were yet again beautifully designed by Marcelle and Eileen with an unusual display in front of the lectern and complementary flower displays on the window cills.

The Crone family demonstrated their “bake off” skills with some very nice cakes with tea and coffee after Mass.  Ann Ross presented both Jane and Desmond with a card and present – and I think they are looking forward to the next 25 years.

Lanette & Neville's Ruby Wedding Anniversary - 14 August 2016

The 9am Mass on Sunday (14th August) was offered up in Thanksgiving for the 40th Wedding Anniversary of Lanette & Neville.  The flowers decorating the Church were specially designed by Eileen and Marcelle with a Ruby Anniversary theme, which were both elegant and beautiful.

In true American style all the congregation were invited by Lanette & Neville to “drinks and homemade cookies” after Mass at the back of the Church – where there was standing room only.
Ann Ross presented a card and hamper to the anniversary couple from all their friends at Coggeshall.  The hamper was very cleverly put together by Ann, on the Ruby theme, with all items of a red connotation – needless to say with a bottle of red wine – but no Red Bull!

The wedding photo of 1976 showing a young bride and groom together with Lanette’s Mum & Dad and a very trendy Neville!

After 40 years of a perfect marriage, a gentle reminder to Neville if he wants to continue his happy marriage - he is on his “first warning”!

A big thank you to Derek for taking the photos and writing the piece above - then twisting my arm to put it on the website. Another big thank you to Eileen and Marcelle for the flowers and to Ann for putting together our 'Ruby Box'. Thanks also to all those who stayed to help us celebrate our milestone with the parish - much appreciated.

Father Gordon enjoying his new garden furniture

Making the most of the sunny weather, here is Father Gordon relaxing this Saturday afternoon seated on his brand new garden furniture lovingly presented by his parishioners to mark his recent Ruby Ordination Anniversary.

Father Gordon extends his appreciation to all parishioners for their wonderful gifts.

Remember to book a House Mass with Father Gordon so he can use his new Holy Communion set too!

Father Gordon's 40th Anniversary Masses

Sunday Mass with the Parish

This was a wonderful celebration for Father and the Parish. St Mary Immaculate was packed. We were treated to lovely music from the choir and a beautiful Mass - it truly was a 'Special Sunday Mass'.

After Mass there was a delicious hog roast lunch with accompanying side dishes and desserts.

Father Gordon was given his gift - an exquisite boxed, silver Communion set for home visits.

Mass on Monday with Bishops Alan, Thomas and the Diocesan Clergy

Another wonderful Mass and fitting celebration of Father Gordon's 40 Years of service as a priest. Our choir did us proud by giving another great performance. Chidren from St Benedict's College were also there to read the bidding prayers.

Many thanks to all those who worked so hard to bring about 2 days of celebration.

Parish Summer Fete- 25 June 2016

Well, it rained ..................... again, but no matter as the hardy souls of our parish turned out once again to support our Summer Fete. I thnk we raised somewhere in the region of £1500, which was excellent considering competing events and the weather.

Hearty thanks go to all those who spent so much time preparing for the day. Thanks to our singers, Mike Wigley and Jean Edkins, who carried on despite the downpour.

Parish Wassail - 13 December 2015 cupcakes Rosary

Drawing the curtains on our Social Calendar for the year.....

Our final event, the ANNUAL CHRISTMAS WASSAIL evening was another spectacular event. Well attended, participated and enjoyed by our cheerful parish family. As always, the company was great and everyone really took part in the singing, Christmas Quiz and the wonderful food went down a treat too.

Thanks to all who helped with the set-up, food preparation and clear-up afterwards. Gloria and Aggie can now enjoy a hot bath, mulled wine and relax for what's left of 2015.

Stay tuned for our spring event!

Have a fabulous Christmas with your loved ones and stay safe on the roads and skies if you are travelling.

A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!

Cupcakes Rosary

On Sunday 8 November at St Mary Immaculate & The Holy Archangels Catholic Church, Kelvedon, we enjoyed a beautiful Cupcakes Rosary. This was to mark the end of 'OCTOBER: Month of The Most Holy Rosary'.

Throughout the month of October, Kelvedon Catholic Parish organised various activities to celebrate The Immaculate Heart of Mary and her message to 3 children in Fatima throughout her apparitions there between 13 May to 13 October 1917. The three children were Lúcia Santos and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto. The vision is also referred to as Our Lady of the Rosary because the children said the vision called herself the "Lady of the Rosary" and she appeared holding a rosary.

We previously shared about the Rosary Recitals held at homes and Church and the wonderful Rosary Making Workshop that Aimee McQuillan held for the children of our parish. Participants and winners of the Rosary Making and Marian Drawing Colouring Competitions received their certificates and prizes today. Well done to Frances Richardson and Aisling Held for winning the Colouring Competition for Ages Groups 4-7 & 8-11 respectively and to Reanne O'Brien for winning the Rosary Making Competition. All entries were judged by our Parish Priest, Fr Gordon Read.

A glorious celebration initiated this year which was without doubt a fantastic tribute to Our Blessed Mother. May she continue to Grace our homes and family through her powerful intercession.
We urge all to continue praying the Rosary as a family.

Annual Curry Night - Saturday 10 October 2015

A lovely evening yet again. Once more Father Gordon provided superb curries which the Social Team complemented with basmati rice, popadoms, Bombay mix, chutney and relish. This was followed by a wonderful selection of 'low calorie' desserts.

Many thanks to the Social Team for organising and running the whole event; thanks to those serving on the bar and indeed, those serving the food.

Saturday 10 October 2015 - Rosary Making Workshop for children, parents and grandparents

OCTOBER: Month of the Most Holy Rosary
We are blessed with many beautiful talents in our parish. Ours is a small parish but the Lord continually blesses us with increasing faith and love for Him and His Beloved Mother, Mary.
The children were so engrossed in the making of their Rosaries. Our thanks to mums and grandmas who came to help out too.

Eileen Roberts made a beautiful floral centrepiece with a Rosary made out of things you can find in most gardens at home. Thank you, Eileen!

Friday 9 October 2015 - Marian Movie for Reflection
Held at Aggie O'Brien's home

What a fabulous afternoon it was!
We started with the Recital of the Rosary. Then we watched "The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima" to mark October being the month of The Most Holy Rosary.

Aptly enough, the movie ended with all enjoying our Apple Roses.

Family Fun Day & Barn Dance - Saturday 26 September 2015

What a wonderful day it was......

An excellent venue and an amazing crowd. We had well over 100 adults and children there.  For our first time hosting a Barn Dance event, we all had a brilliant time. The weather was perfect for an end of September evening. Fabulous spread of food and drinks and most importantly everyone enjoyed the evening thoroughly.  A round of applause to Michael, Sally Staines and their family for the generous use of their Barn
and all their efforts into making this event a success.

To parishioners of Kelvedon Catholic Parish and our wonderful local friends who came, we hope you enjoyed the evening.

To the Caller and Band Scampering Rogues, thank you for the music and the dance lessons. Well done!

To Kelvedon Catholic Parish's Social Group, well done for another fantastic social event!

Same again next year? We say.......YES!

Parish Quiz Night 2015

Friday 24 April - St John Houghton, Tiptree

A great evening where the grey cells were truly tested by a broad set of questions ranging from 'I should know that' to 'Who would know that?' Thanks to Aggie for setting the questions - it must have taken a lot of time. The trophy was won by the 'League of Nations' - well done!

Many thanks must go to the Social Team who put so much effort into organising the evening. Yet again, we were treated to a sumptuous ploughman's supper.

A big thank you to all those who supported the Quiz Night - you raised £474.58 which will be sent to our twin parish in Besters, South Africa. An amazing effort!

Parish Wassail - Sunday 14 Dcember 2014
St Bernard's, Coggeshall

We sang Christmas carols of old and Christmas songs new; all led entertainingly by Mike Wigley. Aggie O'Brien had obviously not slept since the Christmas Bazaar as we were also treated to Christmas Bingo, Christmas Anagrams (fiendishly difficult) and a raffle to boot. In between carols there were sausage rolls, mince pies, cakes and munchies lubricated by mulled wine and soft drinks. A great time was had by all.

Many thanks to Aggie for pulling it all together and giving us such a good time; thanks to Gloria for her lovely cakes; and thanks to Mike for the music and poems.

Parish Christmas Bazaar - Saturday 29 November 2014

What an amazing morning! The weather was kind and people turned out in droves. The stalls were packed with goodies for all ages and everyone seemed to enjoy the occasion.

Parish Summer Fete - Saturday 28 June 2014

Well, it rained again; but look on the bright side, at least it wasn't cold. Despite numerous other events going on we still managed to take a good sum. This is due in no small part to the tremedous generosity of members of our parish who donated gifts, made gifts, gave bottles and baked cakes. Thanks also must go to those who gave so much of their time in planning, preparation and manning (are you allowed to say that these days) the stalls. Lastly, thanks to those who braved the showers and spent their money so freely.

Parish Christmas Bazaar - Saturday 30 November 2013

A tremendous morning at St John Houghton, Tiptree. The organisers and stall holders rose to the occasion again to produce a wonderful array of things to buy, play and eat. The weather was kind and people turned out to support the parish. In two hours the Bazaar raised £2500 (gross) - a marvellous achievement.

Thanks go to the Social Team and those who must have spent hours making and collecting items for their stalls. Well done to all!

Parish Summer Fete - Saturday 29 June 2013

A lovely day - the sun came out, it didn't rain and actually felt warm! As usual, much fun was had by all and for those who couldn't make it - the range of goodies to eat was bigger, better and tastier than ever.

A huge thank you to all who put so much effort into the organisation, preparation and delivery on the day.

Quiz Night - Friday 12 April 2013 - In aid of Besters

A great time was had by all - £550 was raised for Besters - a brilliant achievement. To say that the quiz was competitative was an understatement - 'Team GB Squared' won by a single point.

Many thanks to Viv Talbot for putting the quiz together and Gareth Talbot for acting as Quiz Master. We were also treated to an amazing 'ploughman's supper' - posh or what! Thanks for that go to the hard working Social Team of Jadwiga, Miriam and Pat.

Christmas Bazaar - 24 November 2012

St John Houghton, Tiptree
Another year almost gone; how do we know? The Christmas Bazaar signals the closing weeks of the year and the countdown to the 'festive period'. Once again our parishioners rose to the occasion filling St John Houghton with all manner of goods. Savoury sausage rolls and soup; fancy goods; original watercolours; scrumptious cakes; Christmas suprises; fanastic flower arrangements; Christmas cards; designer gingerbread men; toys and books; and, bottles [full] soon to be emptied. There was time to sit and chat over a cup of tea and a mince pie or two. Angelicus completed the scene by treating us to carols and providing some welcome Christmas cheer. Many thanks to all those who must have worked so hard before, during and after the Bazaar to once again make it a success.

Summer Fete - 30 June 2012

Well, it rained again - but only briefly this time and it was warm. As if by magic the church was transformed into a sea of stalls laden with flowers, china and glass, fancy goods, games to play, games to buy, books, toys, cakes, bottles (full); and yes, even cuddly toys. Teas were served, more cakes eaten and chins wagged as everyone had a thoroughly good time.

Have you ever tried to bounce a ping-pong ball into a cup; or grovelled in dirty water water amongst creepies that would make your skin crawl? These were just two of the feindish games that would have you trying your luck (?) again and again. Great fun for all.

Many, many thanks must go to all who must have spent ages planning and pulling it all together. And thanks to all who came and supported the fete and the parish.

Christmas Bazaar - 26 November 2011

Many thanks to all who supported our Christmas Bazaar last weekend, either by coming or donating items, or through purchasing draw tickets. A special thank you to all who helped to run stalls, set them up and clear away afterwards. You will be pleased to hear that the taking before the deduction of expenses were approximately £2085. I think this is significantly more than last year, which was, of course, affected by the snowy weather.

(From the Parish Newsletter - 4 December 2011)

Curry Night - 4 November 2011

A great evening was had by all. The curries and desserts were wonderful - so many thanks to Father Gordon and the ladies of the 'Social Team' who worked so hard to prepare the food. Thanks also to the servers who glided almost unseen between the tables - they are becoming true professionals.

Much fun was had during the raffle with Sean proving to be the perfect presenter - has he been taking lessons? It did seem slightly fishy however that Maria was a winner - twice!

The evening raised approximately £350 clear profit which will be used for the Senior Citizens' Lunch.

Parish Summer Fete - 25 June 2011

The week leading up to the fete was very wet and unsettled so on the Friday the decision was taken to hold the event in the church. This took an enormous amount of reorganisation [and muscle] at the last minute. As ever, parishioners rose to the occasion quickly clearing pews after Saturday Mass and setting up their stalls. Despite all the hurdles that had to be overcome we still managed to raise £1600. An amazing effort by all.

Many thanks to the Social Team and their band of helpers. Thanks also to the parishioners who came to the fete and parted with their money so generously.

Senior Citizens' Christmas Lunch - 22 January 2011

It was like being able to have Christmas over again - crackers, music, fun and a superb meal cooked by ladies of the parish.

Christmas Bazaar - Saturday 27 November 2010

A tremendous effort from the Social Team and parishioners ensured another success when earlier in the week things were not looking so good (weather and fire).

Curry Night - Friday 22 October 2010

Another wonderful Curry Night! The sumptuous currys were cooked by Father Gordon as usual with parishioners providing rice, samosas and desserts. Father G's currys are renown throughout the diocese - a contingent from Ingatestone (Father's last parish) came - obviously still suffering from withdrawal symtoms having 'lost' their master chef. The desserts were divine; despite my best efforts I could not dissuade people from sharing the chocolate mousse with me.

The evening raised over £600 which will help fund our Senior Parishioners' Christmas Lunch and in sending young people to Lourdes.

A very big thank you to the 'Social Team' who put so much hard work into making this a resounding success.

Garden Party - Saturday 19 June 2010

Flammin' June! Take that which ever way you want.

It's on days like this that you wonder whether or not 'global warming' is some Machiavellian plan invented in the back corridors of Whitehall. It was cold, but dry; cold and wet; windy, cold and wet; and finally, sunny ............ for a bit.

Were we down hearted - NOT ONE BIT!

As always, parishioners young and old made the day a success - you could say that the Spirit flowed like a warm glow - well that's my view.

Many, many thanks to all those who worked so hard to bring the Garden Party to fruition.

And, of course, many thanks to those hardy souls who braved the elements and, more bravely still, parted with their cash.
